Mrs Evans spoke to the Museum's Activity Report for the period to 30 April 2016.
Mrs Evans confirmed: · The shop was well stocked and products sold well – especially corporate gifts and overseas gifts, with repeat custom; · An application for the next round of LEOTC funding had been submitted. There would be competition from other LEOTC providers in the Dunedin area. |

1 This report covers the activities of Toitū Otago Settlers Museum (TOSM) for the period to 30 June 2016.

DISCUSSION
Visitation
2 Visitation for June was 23,547, an increase of 3,078 on June 2015. This brings the total number of visitors for the financial year to 303,951, compared to 308,546 in 2014/15.
3 The exhibition ‘Slice of Life’ continues to be
popular with 13,914 visitors in June and a total of 59,792 visitors since
opening on 18 March 2016.
Financial Summary
4 The financial results below are for the period ended 31 May 2016 and include the operation of both Toitū Otago Settlers Museum and the Dunedin Chinese Garden (DCG).
5 The net surplus for the Financial Year to end of June 2016 was $137K.
6 The financial result for Toitū Otago Settlers Museum was overall in line with expectations.
7 The Chinese Garden was $19K Favourable in Revenue to Year End. The unfavourable variance against budget for the Dunedin Chinese Garden was primarily due to additional costs to appropriately staff the operation.
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITES
Enquiries
8 In June 2016 there were 902 research enquiries, 344 photograph enquiries, 3,552 general enquiries and 63 curatorial enquiries.
Visitor Experience
Exhibitions and Displays
9 On Friday 10 June 2016 the Railway Interactive was launched in the Josephine Foyer. This project was developed by Museum staff with software design by Animation Research. Funding support is acknowledged from The Otago Settlers Association, Dunedin Railways and the Otago Community Trust.
10 The Journey to Lan Yuan film documentary explores the stories of Chinese gold miners who came to Dunedin and this month saw Seán Brosnahan and William McKee travel to Northland and Melbourne to record this story. Scheduled to arrive in China in early July, the team hope to complete the film by the end of 2016, launching the film for Chinese New Year 2017.
Public Programmes and Events
11 The following Public Programmes were held in June 2016: The Tapestry Project; Toddler Time; Tiriti o Waitangi; Tuesday Club; Music Saturdays; Te Reo Māori Theatre – Tātai; Dunedin Star Singers; Tā Moko Tāngata; and Matariki Wananga.
Education
12 LEOTC at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum catered to 484 students and 85 adult supervisors in June 2016.
13 The Toitū LEOTC Social Science contract application was submitted in June 2016 for another 3 year funding contract. At the time of this report, the outcome of the application is unconfirmed.
14 Year 10 students from Kavanagh College performed an original piece of drama in the Ara-i-te-uru Gallery on 13 June 2016 to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi at Otakou. Year 12 students from Kavanagh College, Kings High School and St Hilda’s Collegiate performed NCEA devised drama pieces in Museum spaces.
15 A new Dunedin street art programme has been developed.
16 A meeting of the Toitū Otago Settlers Museum LEOTC Reference Group was held on 29 June 2016. The Reference Group provides input to the LEOTC programme.
Collections Management
17 Collaboration between TOSM Collections staff (Conservator and Registrar) and Lincoln University saw the scanning of the ram’s head snuff mull take place at Lincoln University on 10 June 2016. Modelling data collected during the CT scanning of the mull is being processed.
18 Two Collection Acquisition Group meetings were held this month, which resulted in the retrospective processing of 173 items. In addition, staff continued to make progress with archival cataloguing, processing materials from a large WWI donation and diaries.
19 Preventative conservation took the form of monthly environmental monitoring and bespoke storage solutions, with collection storage solutions developed for bikes, the rams head snuff mull, Scots colours, and a variety of large objects.
20 New volunteers were formally inducted into the Collections Team this month, working on collection swap outs as well as developing an inventory for and re-housing loose material in the archives cool store.
21 Conservation staff facilitated a behind-the-scenes tour for St Hilda’s Collegiate students on primary collection resources for historical research.

Functions and Events
22 Functions in June 2016 included the Otago Civil Contractors Awards, the OSA Midwinter Function, the Otago and Southland Swing Dancing Competition and the Dunedin Host AGM.
Retail
23 Retail sales for June 2016 were $9,270.80 compared to $7,542.40 in June 2015 representing an increase in sales revenue of $1,728.40.
Promotion and Marketing
Media
24 The Toitū retail shop mid-winter sale and the ‘Slice of Life’ temporary exhibition were promoted on NZME stations (Hits, Newstalk ZB, and Coast).
25 ODT articles in June included: One more whirl around the floor; Otago rail story at fingertips; Convention tourism taking off; Genesis and generations; Honour for early Otago business man; Ta moko demonstrated.
Marketing
26 The Museum remains the number one attraction out of 91 attractions in Dunedin on Trip Advisor. In June 2016 there were 22 reviews on Trip Advisor with an average rating of 4.91 out of 5.
27 Nine street banners that sit adjacent to the museum and promote both the museum and the current ‘Slice of Life’ temporary exhibition were refreshed in mid-June 2016.
28 A two week street poster campaign promoting the ‘Slice of Life’ temporary exhibition occurred across Dunedin City from the end of May until mid-June 2016.
29 Popular posts to the Toitū Facebook page in June 2016 included: Coverage of TVNZ One News item featuring staff working on the ‘Journey to Lan Yuan’ documentary; A post about Sir John Roberts, former Dunedin Mayor (1889-90) posthumously inducted as a Laureate in the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame; and a short video clip from the upcoming ‘Journey to Lan Yuan’ documentary.
Online Newsletter
30 A training session to provide instruction in the use of the HAIL online publishing platform was undertaken with staff on 23 June 2016. Planning is underway to publish the first issue in early August 2016.
Dunedin Chinese Garden
31 Visitation to the Garden in June was 1,726 making a total of 43,650 visitors over the financial year; this is an increase of 8,678 on last year.
32 The Garden celebrated The Legend of Qi Yuan (formerly celebrated as the Dragon Boat Festival). There was an increase in the number of local Chinese in attendance.
33 The Garden Ticket office has been revamped and a new sliding window has greatly improved the communication with Garden visitors.
