BACKGROUND

DISCUSSION

Visitors

2      There were 30,016 visitors to the Toitū Otago Settlers Museum (TOSM) from 1 April to 30 April 2018 compared with 30,733 for the same period last year. The total visitor numbers for the Museum for the last financial year were 309,491. The Museum is on track for approximately 320,000 visitors by 30 June 2018.

3      There were 3,577 visitors to the Dunedin Chinese Gardens (DCG) from 1 April to 30 April compared with 3,597 for the same period last year. Total visitor numbers are up by 248 for the year as at 30 April. The DCG is tracking toward a final figure of 51,412 at the financial year-end.

(Note: The high number of visitors in February 2018 was a result of the Chinese New Year event. In 2017 the Chinese New Year event was held in the month of January. The Chinese New Year is the moon occurring between 21 January and 20 February each year.)

Financial Summary

4      The Financial Year to April 2018 was $173K Favourable.

5      The financial result for TOSM / DCG was overall in line with expectations.

Visitor Experience

Exhibitions

6      Since 2014 TOSM has taken a leading role in the WW100 national programme of commemoration. This has been reflected over the last four years by a series of displays interpreting each phase of the war from an Otago perspective.  Anzac Day saw the unveiling of the last display in this sequence - 1918: the final year of conflict - in the Call-To-Arms Military Gallery.  Alongside this the Scots colours were displayed in the Military Gallery for two weeks.

7      The Sketched in Stone Exhibition continues in the Special Exhibitions Gallery, showcasing local lithographic artists of the Victorian and Edwardian era. The exhibition runs until 13 May 2018.

8      The Women’s War: Patriotism, Service & Dissent continues in the Special Exhibitions Gallery, focussing on the World War I experiences of Otago women, ranging from patriotic activity, service as nurses and volunteers, to a minority who stood fast against the war. The exhibition runs until 24 June 2018.

9      Toitu te Whare Taoka is a small photographic display which opened in the NZR Lounge (Bullnose) on 28 November 2017. The exhibition showcases Kāi Tahu whanui’s ongoing relationship with the Museum and celebrates the fifth anniversary of the completion of the redevelopment project. The exhibition runs until 22 May 2018.

Public Programmes

10    A total of nine programmes were held with a total of 779 attendees.

11    The Museum opened early on 25 April 2018 to welcome a group of over 500 people who attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service, with a cup of tea and a biscuit. Later in the day, a talk by Emeritus Professor Richard Wright on World War 1 exhumations at Fromelles, France, attracted a group of 33 visitors. Public programmes with World War I themes are still receiving high visitation.

12    For a full description of the Public Programmes held during the reporting period please see Attachment A.

Education

Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC)

13    A total of 263 students participated in LEOTC programmes during the April period comprising 26 secondary students and 237 primary students (49 adults accompanied these groups).

14    For a full description of the LEOTC activity held during the reporting period please see Attachment A.

Collections Management

15    Work continues on assessing the various Archive facilities across the DCC initiated by the Group Manager Ara Toi with site visits undertaken.

17    Collections Legacy planning work continues with the Director as part of the strategic planning goals for the next few years.

18    Inventory work and environmental monitoring is being undertaken in the two storage strong-rooms.

19    Digital storage needs are continuing to be discussed with both BIS and CCL and good discussion has developed concerning options.

20    There were 232 new records built in Vernon this month.

21    The Collections team continued processing potential donation objects through the IR process and 10 offers of objects for the collection have been received for consideration by the curators this month.

22    For a full description of the Collections activity held during the reporting period please see Attachment A.

Mana Whenua Engagement

23    A representative from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Cultural Mapping Team met with a small group of staff regarding digitisation of the Bill Dacker Collection in Christchurch planned for May 2018. Following digitization the collection will return and be accessioned into the Museum Collection.

24    A group of Ngāti Ruanui youth from Taranaki were at the museum to learn about Pakakohe ancestors and to receive documents relating to the imprisonment of the prisoners held in the area in the late 19th century. This visit was well received and supported by the DCC waiata group and Otakou Runaka. Ngāti Ruanui performed several waiata including the acclaimed Poi E.

25    Collaboration continued with TOSM representatives and Kāi Tahu fashion designers toward an inaugural Fashion Show to be held in the Josephine Foyer of the Museum scheduled for 1 May 2018 as a prelude to Dunedin City ID Fashion Week.

Partnerships and Collaborations

26    The DCC Archives, the Hocken Library and our TOSM Archive produced a joint Facebook post on the Woodhaugh paper mill.

27    The Bill Dacker collection project with Kāi Tahu is progressing well with a visit by Kāi Tahu archivist Jill Durney. The material has been labelled and boxed up in preparation for a transfer to the Cultural Mapping Team in May.

28    A Museum and Heritage Studies intern from Victoria University completed a 12 week placement at TOSM during April 2018. The Museum benefited on input toward various projects including inventory, cataloguing, digitisation and description of films, in the collection.

29    Work on digitisation of the film collection is continuing this month in conjunction with Maurice Hayward of the Film Heritage Trust.

30    The Registrar continues to work with two skilled embroiderers one afternoon per week on re-housing some of the textile works.

31    The Rockliff Scholarship funded by the Otago Settlers Association (OSA) was advertised early April and received seven applications. The successful candidate will be announced in early May.

32    Local Historian Bill Dacker and TOSM Museum Curator Sean Brosnahan discussed the challenge of incorporating Maori perspectives into the Otago Early Settlers Museum in the 1990’s as part of Staff Reflections: Kāi Tahu Whanui Ki Otago, a free talk at the Museum on 14 April 2018. This discussion is part of a wider programme in recognition of five years post re-development of TOSM.
