EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1 This report covers the activities of Toitū Otago Settlers Museum (TOSM) for the period of 1 May to 30 June 2018.

BACKGROUND
2. Not applicable
DISCUSSION
Visitors
3. This has been another record year for visitation to TOSM, with 316,836 visitors attending programmes, events and exhibitions at the Museum. This represents a 7,345, or 2% increase on the previous year. 41,862 people visited during the May – June 2018 reporting period.
4. From 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018 there were 51,194 visitors to the Dunedin Chinese Garden (DCG), an overall increase of 30 on the previous 12 months. Visitors to the DCG were 4,127 for the May – June 2018 reporting period.
(Note: The high number of visitors in February 2018 was a result of the Chinese New Year event. In 2017 the Chinese New Year event was held in the month of January. The Chinese New Year is the moon occurring between 21 January and 20 February each year.)

5. The financial results below are for the period ended 31 May 2018, and include the operations of both TOSM and the DCG.

6. The Financial Year to May 2018 was $127K Favourable. The financial results for TOSM/DCG were in line with forecast expectations. Financial results for June 2018 are pending.
Visitor Experience
Exhibitions
7. The Scottish colours flags were lowered on 7 May 2018 and replaced with the French and New Zealand flags on 11 May 2018. (The Scottish colours have regularly been hung in the Call to Arms Gallery to coincide with ANZAC commemorations.)
8. The popular Sketched in Stone exhibition closed to the public on 13 May 2018. The exhibition was drawn from the Toitu art collection and included many fine examples of lithography from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
9. The Creative Dunedin display was updated on 21 May 2018.
10. No.1 Field Punishment, a video artwork by Pirate & Queen productions was installed on 22 May 2018 near the southern entrance to the Special Exhibitions Gallery, in close proximity to The Women’s War Exhibition.
11. Toitu te Whare Taoka, the display of photographs and audio-visual material showcasing Kai Tahu whanui’s ongoing relationship with the Museum closed on 23 May 2018. The display received support from local and visiting Ngāi Tahu rūnaka.
12. The Women’s War: Patriotism, Service & Dissent closed in the Special Exhibitions Gallery on 24 June 2018. Preparation is now underway for the Museum’s next major temporary exhibition, Suffrage & Beyond – 1893-2018 which marks the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. Suffrage & Beyond opens in the Special Exhibitions Gallery on 7 September 2018.
13. What If? Otago’s Harbour Vision display of the architectural models for the proposed long-term Harbour development created by Dunedin company, Architecture Van Brandenburg continues in the NZR Bullnose area of the Museum until the end of August 2018. The feedback tree received thousands of responses from visitors which fed directly into the DCC’s 10 Year Plan. The feedback tree has now returned to gathering Museum visit feedback.
Public Programmes
14. There were a total of 29 programmes held during May – June 2018 with a total of 626 attendees.
15. A highlight of these programmes was Toitū Te Awa Toitū Te Whenua, Toitū Ngā Wāhine as part of iD Dunedin Fashion in the Josephine Foyer on May 1 which attracted over 100 attendees.
Education
Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC)
16. A total of 1,264 students participated in LEOTC programmes during May – June 2018 period. This figure comprises 284 secondary students and 980 primary students, with 371 adults accompanying these groups.

Collections Management
18. Objects and lithographs from the Sketched in Stone and Women’s War: Patriotism, Service & Dissent exhibitions have been moved from exhibition display to the collection areas for processing and return into storage.
19. There were 575 new records built in Vernon for the May – June 2018 period.
20. The Collections team members continue processing potential donation objects through the IR process and seven offers of objects for the collection have been received for consideration by the curators during this period.
21. New pallets for stacking objects previously stored on the floor have been purchased. Proper storage of these objects will help rationalise space in the Large Object Store and improve access to all items located there. The purchase of a forklift will be considered as part of our Capital Expenditure programme in the new financial year.

Mana Whenua Engagement
23. The Cultural Mapping Team from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu (TRoNT) assisted TOSM staff with the transfer of the Bill Dacker Collection during May 2018. The collection was delivered to TRoNT in Christchurch and will be digitally archived making a historical resource available for TRoNT and TOSM.
24. A carved waharoa, or gateway is planned to be installed at the entrance to the TOSM Galleries. Ngāi Tahu have granted $23,525 to the Museum to help realise this project.
25. Staff from TOSM hosted a group from Tauranga investigating the possible development of a museum in Tauranga. This group also engaged with other cultural institutions in Dunedin during their visit to the city.
26. A group of Kavanagh College students devised and performed an original piece of drama to commemorate the 1840 signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi at Otakou. This piece was performed three times on 13 June 2018 and was part of the Museum’s advertised visitor programme. This is the third year Kavanagh College have used performance and drama to broaden their understanding of the early settler - mana whenua relationship.
27. During the May – June 2018 period members of the Visitor Experience team met with mana whenua to develop migration stories as part of an exhibition scheduled for 2020.
Partnerships and Collaborations
28. Members of the Otago Embroiderer’s Guild are working with the Collections team to develop a new suffrage banner as part of the upcoming Suffrage and Beyond exhibition. The registrar continues the work with two skilled volunteer embroiderers one afternoon per week on re-housing some of the textile works.
29. During the month of June 2018 the Otago Early Settlers Association (OSA) Rockliff scholarship recipient has been trained in Vernon cataloguing and has made good progress cataloguing items from this collection.
30 TRENZ was held in Dunedin from 7- 10 May 2018 with 1,200 delegates representing international travel and tourism buyers. TOSM and DCG collaborated with Olveston historic home marketing a combined offer in part of a wider city programme for buyers.
Commercial Activity
Retail
31. Revenue for retail is $20,364 for May – June 2018 which is an increase in retail of $1,340 on the same period last year.
Venue Hire
32. Revenue for venue hire is $26,495 at the Financial Year to date 31 May 2018. (A comparative figure will be available in the next Financial Year.)
Dunedin Chinese Garden
33. Steering Group meetings were held in May and June 2018 to plan the Ten Year Anniversary celebrations of the Garden. The anniversary is scheduled for September 2018. A photographic display at the DCG will open the occasion on 14 September 2018.
34. A series of scholars will be visiting the DCG from August 2018 through to the Chinese New Year in February 2019 as part of commemorating the Ten Year Anniversary. Scholars will engage with the public in areas of Chinese cultural expertise.
35. The DCG held the annual Legend of Qu Yuan event on 17 June 2018. Over 150 visitors attended the event through-out the day. The Legend of Qu Yuan has been more commonly known as the Dragon boat festival.
